Apartment cleanout checklist: what to do before moving out
Plan an apartment cleanout without last-minute surprises, from lease deadlines and elevators to furniture, donation sorting and the final walkthrough.
Work backward from your key handover
Your move-out day is usually not the best day to discover that a sofa will not fit in the elevator. Check the property manager’s deadlines, whether loading access must be reserved, and the time you are required to return keys.
Sort items into keep, move, donate and remove groups early. You may want extra time to handle valuable belongings, important documents and fragile items separately.
- Confirm your lease or building move-out deadline.
- Ask about elevator or loading-dock reservation rules.
- Create a clearly marked area for items to be hauled away.
Photograph the actual removal load
Take one photo of each area that still contains items to remove. Include couches, bed frames, mattresses, tables, shelves and bagged clutter. If an object needs disassembly to leave the apartment, note that before you request a quote.
Be specific about the apartment floor and the walking distance to parking. A first-floor unit with curbside items is a different job from a fourth-floor walk-up.
Understand what should stay out of the pile
Avoid mixing personal papers, medications, identity documents or valuables into the hauling pile. Set aside paint, chemicals and other restricted materials for appropriate disposal.
Some bulky items such as refrigerators or electronics can require special handling. Confirm acceptance in advance rather than leaving them as an unannounced surprise for the crew.
Plan a final walkthrough
After removal, check closets, balcony, cabinets and storage areas for things you still need. Take your own move-out condition photos if your rental process calls for them. Cleaning, repairs and security-deposit requirements are separate from junk removal service.
